Our Process

IDI Talavera is hand made Mexican Talavera tile, made by our partner company, Talavera Santa Catarina, a certified studio of talavera ceramics in Puebla, Mexico. Their process adheres to the standards set by the local Council of Talavera Regulations. Certified Talavera tile makers are required to pass 16 laboratory tests every 6 months to measure color, transparency, absorption, lead content and many other characteristics.

The production of Mexican Talavera tiles started in Puebla in the 16th century. Due to the abundance of quality clay in the region, the tile became known as Talavera Poblana. Talavera Poblana tile quickly achieved recognition throughout the world for its quality and beauty.

During the tile making process, machinery is not required to produce the tiles. The tile artists mix the local clay in the traditional way with their feet. The clay is then formed into pieces, using molds, and fired. Next, the tiles are glazed and painted. Finally, in order to achieve the finished product, the tiles are fired once more after they are painted.

Talavera tile, the most Mexican of handicrafts, is a mini-melting pot of world culture when it comes to tile making. The colors and patterns of our collection reflect distinct Spanish, Arabic, Italian, Chinese and Mexican characteristics. The influence from several extraordinary cultures makes this collection unique, yet historically accurate.
